I don't know what I'd do without her. She would never have said she chose to work. It explores the complex relationships, issues of class, and perspectives of two women, Claire, a European-American composer in her 30s and mother of one son, and Lola, her immigrant nanny from the Philippines. The novel alternates between the voices of the two women, contrasting their worlds.

When Ann is 9, she and Adele go for ice skating lessons where she meets Ted. A green fly landed on his forehead and it took him forty seconds to lift up his hand and shoo it. She brought me along. Best part of story, including ending: I like that the story evolves on a girl that grew up in abuse of all forms and still managed to collect herself into a responsible adult.

She steals a Lincoln continental from an elderly person and takes Ted's credit card and goes to California with Ann. A Regular Guy explores the strained relationship of a Silicon Valley tycoon with a daughter born out of wedlock, whom he did not acknowledge.
Inafter they divorced, Schieble took Mona to Los Angeles and raised her on her own. I think it takes a long time before a crisis—like AIDS—enters the culture to a point where responses exist in a character, where personal gestures are both individual and resonant in a larger way.
The narration shifts among Ann, her Aunt Carol, and her grandmother Lillian, adding a level of plot and backstory to the novel. This is a new way we live now.
Those are tricky. DS: You can read my comics at GoComics. Best scene in story: I like the scene at the end where Adele shows that she is still in denial about Ann and the way she treated her daughter. And as a unicorn, I am not bound by your human limitations, and therefore I can be a cartoonist, an illustrator, an artist, AND a writer.
And that you were drawn to their English, their turns of phrase and syntax, as much as their experiences! Can you talk a bit about that? Hmmm …. This shows characterization in Melinda that she is open to her heart and can love anyone.
She starts to do things with Jerry because she realizes he is the best thing she can get as a dad. Sometimes the characters themselves suggest things, as weird as that is.
