But it does appeal to young readers, mainly because it is told from their point of view — their passions, their fears, their expectation that every morning holds the promise of adventure. After making a tracing of the map and returning the box, they decide to find the gold themselves. Unable to find Anne and Dick, they leave the island, taking the oars from the children's boat so they cannot escape. Frightened of the pirates, Jim runs off alone. They emerged in and that's a long time ago. I stop short of criticising Enid for this as not everyone in a group shines through at first.

Several weeks later, Trelawney sends for Jim and Livesey and introduces them to Long John Silver, a Bristol tavern-keeper whom he has hired as ship's cook. However, other authors, in the mid 19th-century, continued this work, including James Fenimore Cooper 's The Pilot George is the Enigma. I stop short of criticising Enid for this as not everyone in a group shines through at first. As we know, much like the main characters, Kirrin is to play a recurring role throughout the series and therefore it is where we get the first and firmest impressions of what Kirrin may look like if it were real. Meade 's book Four on an Island, which also recounts a story of four related children including a tomboy along with a dog living on an island with a shipwreck.

This may change in the later books, it's been so long I can't remember. What would you expect? As both a girl who likes girly things AND the youngest child, Anne is the most easily frightened and is the only one who likes things that are looked down upon by the boys and George as being childish or girly. Some seventy-odd years later Five on a Treasure Island is another world for many readers, where children wander the countryside unsupervised, automatically go to boarding school, rarely cheek adults and seem to routinely carry torches, string, matches and other accessories in their copious pockets. With George taking care of the children who suffer gender and even identity problems this means that the Five represent almost anyone. Over on the island, they make a thrilling discovery, which leads them deep into the dungeons of Kirrin Castle on a dangerous adventure.

Job Anderson: The ship's boatswain and one of the leaders of the mutiny. Although their ages are not divulged, or for that matter important, I think it's safe to assume both Fanny and Quentin are around 40 years of age. There is a story that the ship, owned by one of the children's ancestors, sunk while bringing gold back to England and the gold was lost, never to be found.

The box breaks open, but the noise disturbs Uncle Quentin who confiscates the box. Jim is often impulsive and impetuous, but he exhibits increasing sensitivity and wisdom. The plot is a simple yet effective one. Julian, Dick and Anne visit Kirrin Bay for the summer hols to stay with their relatives. At the entrance of the bay is a small island just too far out to be accessible without a boat.

All of these works influenced Stevenson's end product. Alongside George's dog, Timmy who is a strictly concealed secret amongst the childrenthe children have some truly breath-taking adventures in this first, fantastic Famous Five book!
